Tom Cruise Does The Impossible With One-Handed Drift In A Fiat

This summer, petrol heads are getting spoiled with blockbuster car movies like the Fast X and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is also joining the fray in the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One where he shot intense drifting scenes in a BMW and a humble Fiat.

In behind-the-scenes footage released by Paramount Pictures, film director Christopher McQuarrie said, "We came to Rome to shoot a chase scene, something with a lot more ambition and unpredictability that we haven't had in previous chases."

What makes the scenes more exciting is the fact Cruise was actually handcuffed to co-star Hayley Atwell, who plays Grace in the film.

The one-hand driving stunt added to the already challenging tight streets of Rome while drifting on cobblestone instead of flat track surfaces.

The first drift car was a BMW 5 Series, where all four doors were gone after a collision with a Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus C-Max. Cruise was seen being chased by Paris (Pom Klementieff) in a Hummer H2. She also recently starred in BMW's The Calm, which featured fight scenes in an all-electric BMW i7 M70.

Speaking of electric vehicles (EVs), the film brought out an electrified version of the Fiat 500, which automatically got out of a parking spot next to a Ferrari F12.

The small city car drifted through the streets of Rome with an electric powertrain, similar to the late Ken Block's Electrikhana where he slid around Las Vegas in an all-electric Audi S1.

Paramount Pictures will bring Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One out to theaters on July 12, 2023.

The upcoming MI installment isn't the only recent car-filled film in Rome as the latest Fast & Furious installment, Fast X, also shot scenes in the capital city of Italy. It featured a wide array of vehicle stunts including a motorcycle chase between Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) and Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez).
