Plan for Armenian Cultural Center Moves Forward in Encino

A proposal to repurpose an abandoned fire station in Encino as an Armenian Cultural Center has received the blessing of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.
The single-story building, located at 5001 N. Balboa Boulevard, served as Fire Station 83 until 2006, when it was vacated in favor of a new facility across the street. The Armenian Cultural Foundation would later sign a 30-year lease agreement with the City of Los Angeles to occupy the 1940s structure.
The Glendale-based organization is planning a full rehabilitation of Fire Station 83, as well as a modest expansion that would increase its size to approximately 5,600 square feet. Proposed facilities include a reception office, meeting rooms, a kitchen, and a large meeting hall. Potential uses of the community center include educational classes, after school programs, tutoring, senior and social services, and community meetings.
Parking for 11 vehicles is planned through a shared-use agreement with the neighboring Encino Elementary School.
Proposed entitlements include a zone change and a general plan amendment, and the project thus requires the approval of the Los Angeles City Council.
